George Anthony Hetherington

George Hetherington was born in 1923 in Coxlodge, Northumberland. He served his apprenticeship with the Bedlington Coal Company as a mechanical engineer and obtained a Higher National Certificate in that subject at Rutherford Technical College, Newcastle. He then studied at Ashington Mining School, obtaining his First Class Certificate in 1953. He was appointed Manager of Bedlington ‘D’ Colliery in 1956 and subsequently managed Bates, Rising Sun and Wallsend ‘G, and Woodhorn, before becoming General Manager of
Ashington/Woodhorn Collieries

In 1976 he was awarded the Futers Gold Medal for the in-seam mining paper noted below.

He was NEIMME President in 1980-81

Hetherington died in 2014.
