George Hetherington was born in 1923 in Coxlodge, Northumberland. He served his apprenticeship with the Bedlington Coal Company as a mechanical engineer and obtained a Higher National Certiﬁcate in that subject at Rutherford Technical College, Newcastle. He then studied at Ashington Mining School, obtaining his First Class Certiﬁcate in 1953. He was appointed Manager of Bedlington ‘D’ Colliery in 1956 and subsequently managed Bates, Rising Sun and Wallsend ‘G, and Woodhorn, before becoming General Manager of

He was NEIMME President in 1980-81
