William Armstrong was born in 1846 and died in 1918. He was elected as a member of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers in 1867 and as a member of the Council in 1875. He was then elected as Vice-President in 1897 followed by his appointment to President in 1898 to 1900.
