Welcome to The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers website. The Mining Institute is an organisation dedicated to the professions of mining engineering, mechanical engineering, mining electrical engineering and related professions. It is the world’s oldest professional mining organisation and was dedicated to training engineers to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding coal mining industry at home in the UK and abroad.
The Institute has recently secured Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) support* of £4.7m, including development funding of £600,000. More information on our plans is available here and a website for the Common Room is now also in place which includes our brochure and latest developments.
