The Institute is located in Neville Hall, Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SE.
The front door is on the corner of Westgate Road and Orchard Street.
On-street parking is available on Forth Street and Westgate Roadoperated parking meters. You can pay for parking by phone and instructions appear on signage near the parking spaces. The Stephenson Quarter Car park is located 5 minutes walk away. Please be aware that there is a one-way system surrounding the building. All of the on-street parking on Westgate Road is located prior to the entrance to the building on the one-way system.
Public Transport Access Routes and Drop Off Points
Mainline and Regional Rail Services: The Mining Institute is located approximately 2 minutes walk (125 metres) away from Newcastle Central Station. To reach us, turn right out of the front of the Station and walk straight along past the Metro and Royal Station Hotel. The nearest exit is Neville Street and signed within the station.

Bus: A large number of buses stop very close by at Central Station.
Taxi: There is a taxi rank located immediately in front of the building on Orchard Street and another near the entrance to Central Station. Taxis are generally plentiful in the area.
Cycling: A bicycle rack is located immediately next to the front door on Orchard Street. Cyclists can bring bags inside the building for safe storage throughout their visit.
The nearest drop-off point by taxi is on Westgate Road. For coaches, there is a drop off point in a delivery bay on Westgate Road just before Sleepers Hotel, and another at the Castle Keep.
The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers is located at Neville Hall, Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The main entrance has four steps but no hand rail. There is no level access to the front of the building however a portable access ramp is available if necessary. Please contact us in advance to book assistance to be made available for your visit.
The main door is located on the corner of Westgate Road and Orchard Street, beyond which there is an operated door system leading to the foyer which will be opened by a member of staff. On arrival, visitors should use the call system located within the entrance to contact either the main office, library or Manager’s office. The buttons are located on 2 intercom boxes located on the wall to the right. After pressing the button, a buzzer sounds, the right hand door can then be pulled open. You may speak to staff via the intercom.
For wheelchair users and those with mobility difficulties, near level access can be arranged into the Lecture Theatre via Orchard Street. There are however 5 steps to reach other areas beyond the Lecture Theatre inside the building.
From the front doorway, the Lecture Theatre is reached across a level hallway with 5 steps down to the Lecture Theatre itself.
The Library is set on a first floor level with a single flight of broad stairs with a handrail on the outside. However, if you wish to use the collections, we can arrange to bring your items down to a ground floor room.
Function rooms on the first floor are reached via two flights of stairs.
The Oak Room on the ground floor is on a single level once you are within the building.
Hearing aid loops are available in the Lecture Theatre and 2 portable hearing loops are available for meetings if required.
Assistance dogs are very welcome to the building. Water bowls are available.
Guided Tours for Groups
We welcome individuals and groups and can provide free group tours and talks on a variety of subjects. We welcome school visits and can tailor visits to meet the needs of the curriculum and provide learning resources.
Public tours are every Wednesday from 11.30am. Please book on Eventbrite or by phone before arrival.
Guided tours for groups are available to parties booking in advance.
There is a unisex accessible toilet and female toilets on the ground floor, the male toilets are located on the first floor to the left of the entrance to the Library.

We attempt to make the building as accessible as possible within the context of a Grade II* listed historical building. We are working to improve access for everyone and to do everything possible to provide assistance to any of our visitors who require help to visit the building. Our exhibitions and displays are intended to be accessible for as wide a range of visitors as possible, but at the present time we are constrained in the in the adaptations that can currently be made. We are hoping to fully refurbish our premises in 2018-2020 and re-open as a fully accessible venue.
